Alan Paine

Originally founded in 1907 as Paines of Goldaming by Alan’s father William Paine, the Paine brand saw steady growth throughout the early 20th century. Alan Paine Limited, shot up from humble beginnings in Goldaming, to exploring markets and opening shops internationally. One of the most notable turning points saw Alan Paine being appointed US representative by importer Frank L Savage, a bond that would last 4 decades. The company was renamed as Alan Paine when Alan took over the company in the 1960’s steering the company as Alan Paine continued its expansion, coming full circle by opening a shop in Goldaming and cementing Alan Paine as part of Goldaming since 1907.

Alan Paine boast 3 distinct collections, English Explorer, the Classic Collection and the Country Collection now available at Steranko. The English Explorer Collection was inspired by Alan Paine’s connection with the eminent English mountaineer George Mallory (1886-1924), who took part in three expeditions to Mount Everest. Mallory’s final expedition ended when he and his climbing partner disappeared somewhere on the North-East ridge on 8th June 1924. His frozen body was discovered in 1999, 75 years after his disappearance.
Numerous items of clothing were recovered and one such item bore the label W F Paine, 72 High Street, Godalming: the shop owned by Alan Paine’s father.
